FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve collected a few of our most-used, most-loved resources. This is by no means a complete list, as we are constantly finding new books, podcasts, and bits of info we share with our clients.

What is therapy like?
Ideally, therapy is like throwing a tangled-up ball of yarn at someone and having them help you unravel it. We listen for patterns, unhelpful thoughts and unresolved feelings; we provide alternative ways of thinking; we help you tolerate the discomfort of bringing up really hard feelings; and we help you make sense of what's going on for you. All of this happens in a safe, nonjudgmental environment. It's the best.
What can I expect at my first session?
The first meeting is a chance for us to get to know each other, so your psychotherapist asks a bunch of questions and we'll chat about what's been going on for you. At the end of the first session, we will come up with a brief list of goals or areas to work on. You set the pace including what you're comfortable discussing and how much you share.
How long does therapy last?
That's a good question, and one that we don't have a great answer for. Therapy can last a short time or for a longer period depending on the concern and the pacing. In general we work with people long-term, meaning for at least 1-2 years. How frequently you see your therapist is up to you, and will be something discussed early in the process.
How are psychotherapists different from psychologists?
The main difference between psychotherapists and psychologists is that psychotherapists can't formally diagnose mental disorders or fill out medical paperwork for clients.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
To this we say: what's the worst that could happen? We think therapy can benefit just about anyone, and we promise it's not the stuffy, uncomfortable scenario you may be picturing.
What makes your approach different?
All of us at Levity Counselling work as humans first, therapists second. We certainly don't have it all figured out, but that's part of what makes us helpful in our work. We tend to show up as authentic, flawed humans who help you feel heard and seen while keeping in mind the power structures at play in the therapeutic relationship. We don’t want therapy to feel like we’re prescribing knowledge or information to you, but rather that we’re in it with you, a fellow human who also makes mistakes and struggles sometimes. For these reasons, we tend to play well with folks who have had negative experiences with therapy in the past.
How do I know if therapy with you is right for me?
You might not know for sure until you give it a try! Fit is the most important thing about therapy, so we don't expect to be the right therapist for everyone. We suggest you give the first few sessions as a trial period, to ensure you feel the "fit" is there between you and your therapist. If we're not the right fit, we'll make sure you find someone who is!
